As the office manager in the Uhl, Hall, and Rich office, I received the weekly accident reports from the various contractors. My supervisors always told me that it was normal for men to get injured or killed on a project of this size. So I never thought it was abnormal. However, when contractors decide to have thousands of workers out there twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in bad weather, things are liable to go wrong. Tom Lescovski, our safety engineer, took care of those things. He investigated all of the accidents and went out and talked to the site supervisors to determine how another such incident could be avoided. I did not get too involved. I was too busy and barely had enough time to do my own job. I do know that accidents killed twenty-five men on the project and I don’t think anyone thought that was extraordinary. No one seemed to think it was surprising.
